Our Sustainability

Responsible by design — not by exception<

"Fine jewelry should enrich your life — not come at the cost of the world around us. We hold ourselves to sourcing, production, and packaging standards that reflect that belief."

Our Commitment

Beautiful jewelry, responsibly made

At Jewelry Direct, sustainability isn't a marketing statement — it's a standard we apply to how we source our gold, select our gemstones, and design our packaging. We recognize that the jewelry industry carries real environmental and human impact, and we take that responsibility seriously. Here is exactly where we stand.

Responsible Sourcing

Our gold and gemstones are sourced from suppliers who meet rigorous ethical and environmental standards. Conflict-free and traceable where possible.

Mindful Production

We produce to order where possible, reducing excess inventory and waste. Pieces that don't pass quality inspection are reworked, not discarded.

Eco-Conscious Packaging

Our packaging is made from recycled and FSC-certified materials. We have eliminated single-use plastic from all outbound shipments.

Fair Labor Practices

We work only with manufacturing partners who uphold fair wages, safe working conditions, and human rights across their entire supply chain.

Built to Last

The most sustainable piece of jewelry is one that never needs to be replaced. Solid gold and natural gemstones ensure your piece lasts a lifetime — reducing waste at its source.

Continuous Improvement

We are honest that this is an ongoing journey. We regularly evaluate our practices and set new targets — sustainability is a direction, not a destination.

Gold Sourcing

Gold that's held to a higher standard

Gold mining is one of the most environmentally intensive extraction industries in the world. We take this seriously. Our gold is sourced exclusively from refiners and suppliers who operate in compliance with responsible mining frameworks, including conflict-free verification and traceability to origin where available.

We do not source gold from operations that are known to use child labor, engage in unsafe practices, or cause unmitigated environmental destruction. These are non-negotiables — not aspirations.

Because we use only solid 14K and 18K gold, the material in your piece retains its value indefinitely and can be recycled or reused without any loss of quality — making solid gold one of the most inherently sustainable materials in fine jewelry.

Conflict-Free Verified

All gold suppliers are required to confirm conflict-free origin through recognized verification frameworks.

Traceable Supply Chain

We maintain documentation from refiner to finished piece so the origin of every gram of gold we use can be verified.

Infinitely Recyclable

Solid gold is one of the only materials that can be recycled repeatedly with no degradation — your piece will never become waste.

Gemstone Sourcing

Natural stones, ethical origins

Every colored gemstone we use is 100% natural and earth-mined — and we hold those mines and suppliers to the same ethical standards we apply to our gold. We source through channels that comply with the Kimberley Process and equivalent gemstone trade frameworks, and we do not knowingly source from operations with documented labor or environmental violations.

Natural gemstones are finite, precious, and irreplaceable — qualities that make them meaningful. Choosing a natural stone is also a choice to support the communities and skilled artisans in gemstone-producing regions who have worked with these materials for generations.

01

Kimberley Process Compliance

All diamonds and gemstones are sourced through Kimberley Process-compliant channels, ensuring they are conflict-free.

02

Supplier Accountability

We conduct due diligence on all gemstone suppliers and will not continue relationships with those found in violation of our standards.

03

Supporting Mining Communities

Where possible, we prioritize suppliers that reinvest in the communities where mining takes place and provide fair compensation to local workers.

04

Minimal Stone Waste

We work closely with our setters to minimize stone breakage and offcuts during production, treating each natural gemstone with the respect it deserves.

100%
Plastic-Free Packaging
We removed all single-use plastics from our packaging in 2023. Every material that reaches you is recyclable or biodegradable.
0
Pieces Sent to Landfill
Pieces that don't pass inspection are returned for rework, not discarded. Defective materials are recycled wherever possible.
Recyclability of Solid Gold
Solid gold can be melted and recast indefinitely with no loss of quality — your piece will never need to end up as waste.
Packaging

Packaged with purpose

We've redesigned our packaging from the inside out — eliminating plastic, sourcing recycled materials, and choosing suppliers who share our values.

Recycled Gift Box

Our signature gift box is made from post-consumer recycled materials, printed with soy-based inks, and fully recyclable at home.

Recycled Materials

FSC-Certified Paper

All tissue paper, inserts, and outer wrapping are sourced from FSC-certified forests — meaning every tree used is responsibly managed and replaced.

FSC Certified

Zero Single-Use Plastic

We have eliminated all plastic bags, foam inserts, and plastic wrapping from our packaging. Everything is paper, fabric, or plant-based alternatives.

Plastic-Free
Diamonds

Two choices, both clearly labeled

We offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds. The choice between them involves trade-offs that we believe every customer deserves to understand — so we make sure you always know exactly which you're purchasing.

Natural Diamond

Earth-Mined
  • Formed over billions of years — finite and irreplaceable
  • Strong long-term value retention and heirloom quality
  • Supports established mining communities globally
  • Conflict-free verified through the Kimberley Process
  • Each stone is entirely unique in character

Lab-Grown Diamond

Lower Environmental Footprint
  • Chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural
  • Requires significantly less land disturbance than mining
  • Typically 50–70% more affordable for the same visual quality
  • Graded and certified using the same 4 C's standards
  • A real diamond — not a simulant or imitation

Every product listing on Jewelry Direct clearly states whether the diamond is natural or lab-grown. The choice is always yours — we simply make sure you have the information to make it.

Where We're Headed

Our ongoing commitments

Sustainability is a process. Here is what we are actively working toward.

Expanded Traceability

We are working toward full mine-to-market traceability for all gold and gemstones — so we can share the exact origin of every material with you.

Take-Back Program

We are developing a jewelry take-back and recycling program for customers who want to responsibly retire older pieces — launching soon.

Carbon-Neutral Shipping

We are actively evaluating carbon offsetting and neutral shipping options and plan to implement a program across all U.S. shipments.

Annual Impact Reporting

We are committed to publishing an annual sustainability update holding ourselves publicly accountable to the commitments outlined on this page.
